The Ancient Image

You could Tell from the coloring
of her face
knees
And
hands,
she had not
a speck
of Western blood
in her veins.

Flying thruuuuuuuuu
concrete and steel canyons
in a
Sub-
Way
car she sat,
her face
an ancient African carving.

You wondered                         How Much
glazed red eyes
had seen,
How Much she really knew
about Civilizations-
their rise
And
their fall,
Other worlds,
the elastic everchanging universe
and things
Like joy
pain or truth.

Every time I read this poem, I like it more. It's poignant and the images become even more vivid with each reading. Thank you.
